There are two different types of implants that are used for breast augmentations, and both have their own unique advantages and qualities. Choosing the right type of implant depends on several circumstances that will vary among patients, but here are some details that can assist you in this decision:
Saline Implants
These implants are filled once they are placed inside the body, which allows doctors to adjust them for a highly symmetrical end result. This also allows the implants to be inserted through a smaller incision that may be placed in various unobtrusive positions, including the underarm, around the areola, and even through the belly button. With today’s advanced surgical techniques, doctors have been able to improve the feel of saline implants so that they better mimic natural breast tissue.
Silicone Implants
Years of rigorous testing has shown saline implants to be a completely safe choice for breast augmentation. Because they are prefilled before implantation, these implants are usually placed through an incision hidden along the bottom crease of the breast. Silicone implants are usually chosen for their natural feel, and are ideal for women who do not have much preexisting breast tissue.
It is possible for silicone implants to rupture without the noticeable visual change that would accompany the breakage of a saline implant, so women who choose silicone should get periodic MRIs to ensure that the implants aren’t leaking.

Gynecomastia is a condition in males which is characterized by abnormal amounts of breast tissue. The condition is usually triggered by an imbalance of testosterone and estrogen in the body, and can affect one or both breasts. Although gynecomastia is not a serious problem, the condition can cause major self-esteem issues that often can only be resolved by surgery.
While there are many causes of gynecomastia, by far the most common cause is heredity—it runs in the family. In those men who inherit this condition, it usually starts at puberty.
Of all the medications listed below that can cause an imbalance of testosterone and estrogen, the most common culprit in causing gynecomastia is the improper use of anabolic steroids by athletes.
- Anabolic steroids
- Anti-androgens
- AIDS medication
- Anti-anxiety medication
- Antibiotics
- Antidepressants
- Ulcer medications
- Chemotherapy
- Heart medications
Less commonly, chronic medical conditions such as the following can cause gynecomastia.
- Hypogonadism
- Aging
- Tumors
- Hyperthyroidism
- Kidney failure
- Liver failure
- Malnutrition
The condition is not only embarrassing to most men, it can sometimes be painful. Certainly you should see your doctor if there is swelling, pain, and tenderness in your breasts or discharge from your nipples.
Some with pubertal onset of gynecomastia can see the condition diminish or disappear spontaneously. Unfortunately, however, many do not and require treatment.
Treatment Options
Medication used to treat breast cancer such as tamoxifen and raloxifen are sometimes helpful to those who suffer from gynecomastia. However, more often than not your doctor may recommend surgery if there is still a significantly noticeable condition.
Surgery for gynecomastia includes either or both of liposuction of the male breasts or direct excision of the abnormal tissue through small incisions around the areola. Combining these techniques is often referred to as “male breast reduction” surgery and provides for a flat male-looking chest. In experienced hands, male breast reduction is well tolerated, has very few complications, a rapid recovery and an extremely high rate of patient satisfaction.
