    3 Elements of a Natural-Looking Facelift

    Last updated 1 year ago

A facelift, or rhytidectomy (Greek for “surgical removal of wrinkles”), is a common type of cosmetic procedure for giving the face a more youthful appearance. Wrinkles are caused primarily by aging, sun damage, and cigarette smoking, which break down the collagen molecules of the skin. Staying well-hydrated can help to delay the onset of wrinkles by preventing moisture loss in the skin.

In order to remove wrinkles while preserving your face’s natural appearance, your doctor uses state-of-the-art surgical techniques and the latest equipment.

Scalp incision: A facelift removes wrinkles by tightening the skin around the face. A small flap of skin is removed and the face is pulled upward to smooth out the skin. By removing skin from the top of the scalp above the hairline, the resultant scarring is concealed beneath the patient’s hair. Women tend to achieve better results than men after a facelift.

Barbed sutures: Suturing is the process of closing the skin, typically using nylon or silk thread. Some sutures may dissolve on their own and be reabsorbed by the body. Regardless of the material, traditional sutures must be tied in individual knots. A new type of suture called the barbed suture closes skin without tying any knots, letting the skin grow back together more naturally and reducing scarring.

Eyelid surgery: Also called blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery is done to remove excess skin around the upper and lower eyelids. During the procedure, wrinkles around the eyes are smoothed in a similar manner as in a facelift. A blepharoplasty is commonly performed along with a facelift in order to enhance the patient’s final appearance.

What to Expect from Male Breast Reduction Surgery

    Last updated 1 year ago

Gynecomastia is the medical term for abnormal breast enlargement in men. Gynecomastia can be triggered by a hormone imbalance, such as low testosterone levels or high estrogen levels. Several medications and street drugs have been known to cause gynecomastia as well, including drugs used in the treatment of prostate cancer, antidepressants, alcohol, and marijuana. While in some cases the condition may resolve on its own, many men seek surgical treatment to remove the excess breast tissue.

Here’s what to expect before and after surgery:

    • Preparation: Your doctor will discuss whether or not you are an appropriate candidate for breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty. Gynecomastia in adolescent males is usually temporary and will resolve eventually. If you meet the criteria for surgery, then your doctor may ask you to stop certain medications in order to reduce the risk of bleeding
    • Procedure:A breast reduction operation typically happens in three phases: anesthesia, liposuction, and excision. Because gynecomastia surgery is a serious procedure, you will be given a general anesthetic to increase your comfort. Your doctor will then use liposuction to remove fatty tissue from the breast and then excise (cut out) the extra skin and breast tissue. Special cuts will be made to close the operation site and minimize scarring.
    • Recovery:Your doctor will give you several instructions for your postoperative recovery. These will include information on changing your dressings and bandages, resuming normal activity levels, and when to return for your follow-up appointment. Be sure to take any pain medication and antibiotics exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
